LatiNew debuts its downtown chapter at Nublu on Saturday, April 7, with multi-talented performer Stéphane San Juan. Born in France, San Juan has toured the world with a true A list of Brazilian, European and African musicians: Caetano Veloso, Elza Soares, Maria Gadu, Seu Jorge, Amadou & Mariam, Manu Dibango, Jane Birkin, and many others who have been backed by San Juan’s talents as a drummer, percussionist and singer. Stéphane will perform at Nublu a repertoire including original pieces from his last album “Systeme de Son”, as well as his upcoming release “Saved by the Drums”.
Backed by Dario Boente (piano, a LatiNew performer last year), Laurent David (bass) and Michael Leonhart (trumpet), San Juan will take you through a pulsating journey spanning Mali and Brazil, passing by Cameroon, Cuba, France and the United States. In the truest LatiNew polyglot vibe, Stéphane will be singing in French, Portuguese and Yoruba, always powered by his outstanding skills as a drummer and percussionist. Besides his own composition, including those he co-authored with Chico Buarque and Wilson das Neves, and covers from his heroes Tom Jobim and Abdullah Ibrahim.
